Cary Comes Home: From Bristol to Hollywood

‘Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. Even I want to be Cary Grant.’

Our new tour, launched in November 2023, coincided with the launch of ITVX’s new 4 part drama ARCHIE – filmed in Liverpool! But Bristol is where Archie Leach was born and where the seeds of Cary Grant were sown.

Walk the streets that Archie knew as a boy and that Cary returned to, again and again, for the rest of his life. Theatres and cinemas, hotels and restaurants, and the harbour – places that helped form and transform him into a Hollywood star and style icon. An extraordinary story that’s also threaded through with secrets and lies as enduring as Archie’s Bristol landscapes.

ARCHIE LEACH GETS LUCKY

Cary Grant, the world’s most famous movie star, started life as Archie Leach in Bristol. Years later he told this story about working backstage at Bristol Hippodrome. Cary could, however, be liberal with the truth. On one visit home he convinced people that Leigh Woods had been named after Vivien Leigh.
