We’re working with the brilliant team at M Shed to take you back to the 1950s — the heyday of Bristol docks.

In 1817 a female convict ship, ‘The Friendship’, sailed from England to Australia with 101 women, ten of them from Bristol Newgate prison – now the site of The Galleries Shopping Centre in Bristol.

In late 2023, with funding from Historic England and the University of the West of England, we explored the forgotten lives of these women.
