Promenade Performance, Clevedon Seafront
Free event, booking recommended
Out of the blue, one Sunday morning in spring 1914, Clevedon woke up to something very unexpected. Votes for Women had been on the agenda for 50 years with suffrage societies everywhere – including Clevedon. But promises had come to nothing and patience was running thin. And on this Sunday morning the evidence of this impatience was plain for all to see. But what happened? And who was responsible?
Clevedon Litfest uncovered a fascinating piece of the town’s history and invited Bristol’s Show Of Strength Theatre Company to collaborate on an outdoor performance telling this forgotten story – in the place where it actually happened.
5 Bristol and Somerset based actors – plus surprises – play a range of real and fictional Clevedon characters including real suffragette Mabel Hunt.
